Built on the site of an old mosque, the cathedral of Almudena takes its name from the Arabic word al-mudayna, meaning "citadel". According to the legend, when in 1083 Alfonso VI reconquered Madrid and expelled the Muslims, he became obsessed with finding a valuable icon of the Virgin Mary that centuries before had been hidden within the walls of the citadel so that it would be safe. Unable to locate the lost figure, King Alfonso VI gave himself up to prayer until a section of the walls collapsed and revealed the image, still lit by the candles with which it had been buried centuries ago.

Calle

*** Malasaña is one of the historic neighborhoods of Madrid that, curiously, brings together the most modern and underground residents of the city.

The castle or fortress is linked to the Mendoza family, from which the town became dependent in the fourteenth century. The construction that has survived to this day dates from that century or the next, when it became the residence of the Marquis of Santillana and his family, future dukes of the Infantado. It was the home of Queen Juana of Portugal and her daughter Juana la Beltraneja, who aspired to the throne of Castilla-León (on which the dramatized visits are, by the way). It has also welcomed kings invited by the Mendoza, as John II or Philip III.
